The Veterinary Public Health Department at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Nottingham, recently held a significant event as part of their ‘One Health One Welfare’ program. As part of this, Year Five students presented on the topic, “A Career in Veterinary Public Health: Challenges, Opportunities, and Future Directions”, as well as getting the chance to hear industry professionals share valuable insights on working in veterinary public health (VPH).
Our Business Development Manager, Ioana Dobre, a veterinary professional with extensive experience in the VPH sector, was invited to be a guest speaker at the event. Her presentation aimed to address several key areas: the current state of the meat industry, the motivations behind immigrants pursuing careers in this field, and the various career paths available to new graduates within VPH.
During her talk, Ioana shared her experiences and observations, helping to demystify the veterinarian’s role in VPH and highlighting the vital contributions they hold in this sector. She discussed the unique challenges and opportunities that VPH professionals face, emphasising the importance of their work in ensuring food safety and public health. She also met with Adina Constantin, a former E&J colleague, who is now a Teaching Associate at the university.
This event underscored the collaborative efforts between academia and industry to educate and inspire the next generation of VPH professionals. By engaging with UK graduates and addressing the misconceptions surrounding veterinarians’ roles in abattoirs, initiatives like these play a crucial role in shaping the future of VPH careers. The students demonstrated a keen interest for starting careers in VPH with E&J, reflecting a genuine desire to contribute to this crucial field.
We are incredibly proud of Ioana’s participation in this event, providing the students with a comprehensive understanding of the VPH landscape and encouraging them to consider the diverse career options available within this essential field.
