Export Official Veterinarians work at our borders, ensuring products of animal origin are safe to be exported internationally. They understand legislative issues within the exporting sector, keep up to date with any regulation changes, and have thorough knowledge of packaging and labelling requirements.
Daniel is one of our Export Official Veterinarians and has worked at E&J for over two years, assisting with our export services in the West of England. With the majority of UK graduates choosing to go into clinical practice, Daniel is one of few UK veterinarians working in public health, helping us ensure food is kept safe for consumers.
We caught up with Daniel to find out more about his role…
What does your role involve?
I am responsible for inspecting products of animal origin presented for export and scrutinising the accompanying documentation to determine if the consignment meets the public health criteria of the destination country. I then complete a certificate to this effect which accompanies the consignment and is checked by the border officials at entry.
What do you enjoy most about your role?
I enjoy the variety the role offers. The benefit of working for a big company like E&J is that we have many customers which gives me the opportunity to work in different locations, exporting a variety of products to different countries.
What made you want to work in veterinary public health?
I have always been good at dealing with documentation and regulation. I chose to work in my current position to use these skills and feel rewarded by helping customers with export issues and improving the reputation of the United Kingdom with regards to international trade.
It’s often an overlooked career path in the United Kingdom and can be very rewarding, as much so as clinical work.
What have you learned during your time at E&J?
I’ve had the chance to work with a variety of people from different countries and backgrounds and learn more about their experiences. I’ve met some fantastic personalities during my time at E&J and had the opportunity to learn from them and develop my exports knowledge.
