Our Country Ambassadors work with international universities to inspire graduates to come join us in the UK and start a rewarding career in veterinary public health. In the veterinary industry, global talent is crucial, with a countrywide shortage of qualified vets making international recruitment essential for filling public health roles.
Gancho Chakov is a Technical Manager and has been at E&J for over six years, developing his experience across a range of roles including Meat Hygiene Inspector, Official Veterinarian and Area Manager.
He is also our Country Ambassador for Bulgaria, working with Trakia University in Stara Zagora to encourage veterinary students to consider roles within Official Controls. This includes presenting to students on the opportunities we offer, attending careers fairs, and supporting with recruitment activity.
We sat down with Gancho to find out more about his Country Ambassador role…
Why did you choose to become a Country Ambassador?
I chose to apply for this position as I have good connections with Trakia University in Bulgaria. I wanted the chance to interact with students and inspire them to pursue a career in the UK.
What do you like best about the role?
I enjoy having the opportunity to talk to young people and inspire them to work in public health. Official Veterinarian roles are very important for protecting animal welfare and ensuring food is safe, and there are some great opportunities for graduates in this sector.
What have you done so far?
In June, we organised a presentation as part of the International Conference of Farm Animal Diversity held by DAGENE. I’ve also attended a careers fair at Trakia University, where I had the chance to meet with veterinary students and share more about the work we do at E&J.
What activities do you have planned as part of your Country Ambassador role?
In 2025, I am hoping to arrange another presentation at Trakia University, hopefully in October 2025 when BULVET Medica exhibition will be held. I’m also planning some online presentations and webinars which detail the range of career options within veterinary public health.
What impact do you hope to have?
I hope to inspire graduates to follow my path and build a worthwhile career in public health.
