World Day for Cultural Diversity, celebrated on the 21st of May, was established by UNESCO to highlight the world’s many cultures and the essential role they play in achieving peace and sustainable development. It recognises the importance of diversity, while also promoting unity and intercultural dialogue.

At E&J, diversity is at the heart of what we do. With veterinary professionals from 49 countries working across the UK, our multicultural workforce helps us fill veterinary public health roles and provide a reliable service nationwide. The varied backgrounds and experiences of our colleagues bring unique insights, skills, and a global perspective to our work.

Celebrating diversity is not just about recognising differences—it’s about valuing them. We believe that a respectful, inclusive environment enables everyone to thrive. By embracing cultural diversity, we build stronger teams, foster deeper understanding, and create a workplace where every voice matters.

We asked our colleagues to share what they love about their home country. Here’s what they said…

What I love most about Türkiye is the dedication, resilience and strong sense of community that define its people. These qualities are especially important in the field of Veterinary Medicine, where we demonstrate commitment to animal welfare, food hygiene and public health. Yagmur Turgut, Official Veterinarian, Türkiye

“I’m incredibly proud of my culture and the resilience, strength, and passion that define Portuguese people. These qualities are powerful assets that I believe can contribute greatly to succeeding in the Official Veterinarian role.”   Sara Basto, L&D Technical Lead, Portugal

“Türkiye holds a special place in my heart, not only because it is my home country but also because of its rich history, vibrant culture, and strong sense of community. The country has a deep-rooted tradition in veterinary medicine, with a strong emphasis on animal health and welfare.” Ceylan Zahiri, Official Veterinarian, Türkiye
