World Food Day takes place every year on the 16th of October, marking the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, 80 years ago today. This year’s theme is “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”, calling for global collaboration to create a peaceful, sustainable, prosperous and food-secure future.
The day is often marked by discussions on food sustainability, but it is also important to recognise the everyday impact of those ensuring food supplies are safe, humane and held to the highest standards. Our E&J team work at the heart of the food industry, conducting vital checks which prevent foodborne illness and prioritise consumer safety. From farm to fork, they play a crucial role in safeguarding public health and maintaining trust in the food we eat.
In recognition of World Food Day, we’d like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the hard work that our staff do every day to ensure all food that reaches the public is safe and high-quality, and that animal welfare standards are maintained. We’d also like to thank those working tirelessly across the globe for sustainability and security in the food industry, whose contributions are crucial to a more equitable and inclusive future.
We asked one of our Meat Hygiene Inspectors, Ahmet Aktas, to reflect on how his role impacts food safety. Here’s what he said…
“The UK has many vital processes in place, which make meat as safe as possible for consumers, with Meat Hygiene Inspectors playing an active part in this. I am responsible for inspecting white and red meat, examining this to identify any pathogens, residues or foodborne diseases, along with ensuring production quality. The work we do helps make sure food is safe from the early stages of production, protecting public health across the UK and beyond.”
