At E&J, we believe that World Veterinary Day serves as an important occasion to recognise the invaluable contributions of veterinary professionals from across the world. From ensuring the health and welfare of animals to supporting food safety, public health, and environmental conservation, veterinarians play a critical role in our communities.

It offers the opportunity to honour dedication, compassion and expertise, highlighting the many ways veterinarians contribute to a safer and more sustainable world for people and animals. The theme for 2025 is “Animal Health Takes a Team”, highlighting the significance of collaboration and teamwork for protecting animal health and welfare, and expressing gratitude for everyone involved in this vital work, not just veterinary professionals.

Our colleagues perform a wide range of important duties such as conducting vital abattoir checks, inspecting animal products that enter the UK, and ensuring UK meat is safe for export. We also have vets working in small animal clinics, contributing to the wellbeing of pets and their owners far and wide.

We are proud of each and every one of our amazing professionals and all the fantastic work they do. Whether working as an Official Veterinarian, Meat Hygiene Inspector or in a support role, all our employees help contribute to animal health and welfare in a meaningful way.

To celebrate World Veterinary Day, we asked some of our colleagues to share their thoughts on the roles that contribute to safeguarding animal welfare, and to reflect on the importance of collaboration and teamwork in the veterinary industry…

“I believe veterinary roles are crucial, ensuring high standards of animal welfare whilst protecting public health through disease control and food safety. As an Official Veterinarian, I see first-hand how our work upholds these responsibilities and contributes to the integrity of the entire food chain.” – Ismail Sahindokuyucu, Official Veterinarian

“Meat Hygiene Inspectors (MHIs) play a vital role in the meat industry, not just in the UK but worldwide as well. Knowing that our inspections give the public the confidence to consume meat safely makes me proud. My role is essential part of the “from farm to fork” food safety practice. I am proud to be a MHI.” Ahmed Agrama, Meat Hygiene Inspector

“Veterinary roles are vital, because we safeguard both animal well-being and public health. Whether in clinics, farms, or abattoirs, our presence helps ensure that animals are treated with respect and that the food reaching people’s homes is safe and responsibly produced. My role as an Official Veterinarian allows me to make a meaningful difference every day — not in loud or dramatic ways, but through consistent care, vigilance, and a deep commitment to doing the right thing for animals, people, and the earth. In our abattoir, my team plays a direct role in preventing animal suffering and ensuring compliance with welfare legislation. From checking unloading conditions and verifying animals are fit for slaughter, to monitoring stunning procedures and ensuring no compromised animals enter the food chain, we’re constantly balancing regulatory responsibilities with real-time decisions that impact both animal welfare and food safety. Within the industry, there’s a shared understanding that what we do matters — and that sense of purpose keeps us going.” – Mazhar Kaya, Official Veterinarian
