World Veterinary Day recognises the vital contributions of veterinary professionals from across the world.
This year’s theme for World Veterinary Day is “Veterinarians: Guardians of Food and Health”, highlighting the critical and systemic role veterinarians play in safeguarding food safety, food security, public health, and animal health worldwide. From the earliest stages of production through to the final point of inspection, their expertise and dedication help maintain public trust and uphold the highest standards.
We have veterinarians working nationwide to ensure the safety of our food and the protection of animal welfare. From our Official Veterinarians working in abattoirs, to our Portal Veterinarians checking products of animal origin at our borders, we are proud to have so many experienced professionals supporting public health and ensuring safety across the food chain.
These veterinary roles often go unnoticed, but are a vital part of reliable food production and deserve to be recognised. We’d like to thank all our colleagues for their contribution to safeguarding public health, ensuring that people across the UK and beyond can rely on safe food, high standards, and the protection of animal welfare.
To mark World Veterinary Day, we asked some of our colleagues to share their thoughts on why non-clinical roles are essential to the veterinary industry…
“As Official Veterinarians, we work behind the scenes to protect both animal and human health. By upholding high standards in food production and preventing the spread of disease, we help ensure that food is safe, traceable, and responsibly produced.” – Ece Sengoz, Official Veterinarian
“Export Official Veterinarians support food safety by certifying that exported animal products comply with rigorous animal health and food safety requirements, safeguarding consumers and maintaining trust in global food trade.” – Daniel Bowles, Export Official Veterinarian
“Food safety doesn’t happen by chance. As Official Veterinarians, we spot risks, take action, and ensure only safe food reaches people.” – Ece Kardas, Official Veterinarian
