From the Emerald Isle to Eville & Jones – an interview with recent veterinary graduate Kieran O’Mahony

This week Meat Hygiene Inspector (MHI) Kieran joins the Eville & Jones team from Dublin. He is preparing to take the Official Veterinarian course in September and is looking forward to a long and rewarding career in veterinary public health.

What did you do before working at E&J?

I am a recent graduate of UCD Vet School in Dublin, I finished my clinical rotations in April, successfully completed my final exams in May and graduated (virtually unfortunately) on the 15h of June.

What attracted you to a career in veterinary public health?

Throughout our clinical years of university, we had to complete 24 weeks of placements in a variety of veterinary settings such as equine practice, small animal, mixed animal and in a meat factory. From these placements and our learning in university it was VPH where I found myself developing the greatest interest. From these experiences I decided that I would like to build a career in VPH and after a bit of research Eville and Jones appeared to be a great place to begin this career and follow these interests that I developed at UCD.

How would you like to see your career progress and what are your aspirations?

I am looking forward to working in Wales over the coming months firstly as an MHI, then OV when I have completed the training in September. After gaining sufficient experience here I would hope to move onto Export OV work and hopefully even greater opportunities after this.

What would you say to anyone considering a career in veterinary public health?

There appears to be a great amount of opportunity and work available to anyone interested in this area of Veterinary and plenty of variety once you begin your career, along with a better amount of structure to your working day and week.

How has the E&J induction process been so far?

Great, the training team are very friendly and helpful, and there has been plenty of laughs along the way.
