World Food Safety Day raises awareness of how foodborne illnesses can be prevented, detected and managed, ensuring that food is kept safe across the globe. It is important for food safety regulations to be followed across every stage, from production to consumption, to safeguard consumers against foodborne illnesses.
Keeping food safe is a huge part of what we do, with our veterinary professionals conducting essential checks to ensure food can be enjoyed without risk. We work in abattoirs and meat processing plants, inspect products of animal origin at our borders, and check animal feed meets legislation, all of which contribute to local and global food safety.
Food is necessary for health and wellbeing and access to safe food is vital for protecting public health. Without this work, the risk to consumers would increase significantly, causing issues across the food chain. So many hardworking professionals contribute to food production and preparation, which is something that should be recognised.
Here are some quotes from our E&J colleagues about the work we do:
“Meat Hygiene Inspectors (MHIs) play a vital role in the meat industry, not just in the UK but worldwide as well. Knowing that our inspections give the public the confidence to consume meat safely makes me proud. My role is essential part of the “from farm to fork” food safety practice. I am proud to be a MHI.” – Ahmed Agrama, Meat Hygiene Inspector
“Official Veterinarians navigate complex issues like disease control, legal compliance at domestic and international level, fraud prevention and more, and their expertise is indispensable in making informed decisions about the safety and quality of meat products.” – Alessio Motta, OV
“Through official controls delivered by OVs and wider inspection teams, public health and animal welfare are being actively and continuously protected.” – Sebastian Zorescu, Area Manager
“I believe veterinary roles are crucial, ensuring high standards of animal welfare whilst protecting public health through disease control and food safety. As an Official Veterinarian, I see first-hand how our work upholds these responsibilities and contributes to the integrity of the entire food chain.” – Ismail Sahindokuyucu, Official Veterinarian
We are incredibly proud of the impact our colleagues have on food safety and continue to champion the vital work of professionals across the food industry.
